1926
1926 Trotsky Ousted -Stalin won his battle for control of the Soviets and, in 1926, he ousted Trotsky from the Party. Trotsky was assassinated while in exile in Mexico.
1926 Ford Trimotor Introduces - (6/11/26) The Ford Trimotor was introduced by the Ford Corporation. The plane was very similar to the Junker Transport. It was encased in corrugated aluminum. The Trimotor was powered by three 300 hp engines.
1926 Military Coup in Poland - (5/12/26) Jozef Klemens Pifsudzki, a Polish marshal, moved troops into Warsaw and forced the resignation of the Polish premier.

1927
1927 Commercial Trans-Atlantic Radio/Telephone Service- (1/7/27) AT&T inaugurated transatlantic radio telephone service. The first call was made by AT&T's president, who uttered "Hello London."
1927 Chiang Kai-shek Breaks With Communists - (4/12/27) Chiang Kai-Shek led military campaigns in which he successfully took control of much of China. Chiang had been in control of the government since the death of Sun Yat-Sen, and had worked together with the Communists. However, in 1927, Chiang set up a separate government and turned against the Communists. Chiang was able to suppress the Communists quickly; but this marked the start of the Chinese Civil War that ended 20 years later with opposite results.
1927 Television Invented - The first public demonstration of television was given when a speech of Commerce Secretary Hoover, given in Washington, was shown simultaneously to a group of investors in New York. The medium would eventually change the world.
1927 French Cross South Atlantic - Captain Dieudonné Costes made a non-stop flight from Senegal in West Africa to Natal, Brazil with his navigator, Lieutenant Commander Le Brix. The flight lasted 18 hours.
1927 Lindbergh Crosses The Atlantic - (5/27/27) On May 27th, Charles Lindbergh arrived in Paris, after completing the first non-stop flight between New York and Paris. The flight was 3,600 miles long, and took Lindbergh 33.5 hours. Lindbergh received a prize of $25,000 for his feat.

1928 First Five Year Plan In The Soviet Union-The Soviet Union launched an ambitious five year plan for economic growth. The plan's aim was rapid industrial development. The plan was the first of many economic plans that guided the Soviet economy. The plan also reversed the New Economic Program, which had temporarily liberalized the Soviet economy.
1928 Warlord Era Ends - (6/8/28) The Chinese Nationalists, led by Chiang Kai-Shek, captured Peking. This ended their Northern Expedition, where they defeated the warlords of the North. This ended the period of warlord rule in China.
1928 Kellogg-Brand Pact -(8/27/28)The Kellogg–Briand Pact was developed to outlaw war. It started as a bilateral French–American accord, but 14 nations signed up immediately, and 62 nations eventually signed. The treaty marked the high point of idealism in the pursuit of peace.
1928 Earhart First Women To Fly Across Atlantic - (6/18/28) On June 18th, Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic. She flew as a passenger in an aircraft that took 24 hours and 49 minutes to make it across the Atlantic. Her pilots were Wilmer Stultz and Slim Gordon. The aircraft was a Fokker F.VIIb–3m.
1928 Flight From San Francisco To Australia -(6/9/28) On June 9th, (Australians) Charles Kingsford Smith and Charles Ulm completed a 7,316 mile flight from the United States to Australia. The flight was made via Hawaii and Fiji. The pilots were accompanied by (Americans) James Warner, as radio operator, and Harry Lyon, as navigator. They left San Francisco on May 31st. The team flew 27 hours to Honolulu, and then continued on June 3rd, bound for Fiji. After 34 hours, they arrived in Suva, Fiji. The final flight, to Australia, took 21 hours. The journey took place in a Fokker F.VIIb-3m.

1929
1929 Stalin Enforces "Forced Collectivization" -Stalin began a policy of "forced collectivization" of farms. Small farmers were forced off their land and onto collectives. Those who refused were killed. Thousands died, and Soviet agriculture never recovered.
1929 Settlement of Tacna Arica Question -(6/3/29) In 1929, Chile and Peru settled a longstanding border dispute. Under terms of the agreement, Chile was award Arica and Peru was award Tacna. Chile held all of the territory it had taken from Bolivia, but accorded Bolivia a railway outlet to the Pacific.
1929 Rioting in Palestine - (8/31/29) In 1929, the first large-scale attacks by Arabs on Jews took place in Palestine. The attacks were initially sparked by a dispute on prayer at the Wailing Wall. The riots spread to Hebron, where 29 Jews were killed. All told, 67 were killed, and Palestine spiraled into violence.
1929 Stock Market Crash -(10/29/29) The 1920's had been years of speculation on Wall Street. This all came to an end, however, on October 29th, on what became known as "Black Tuesday." By November 13th, the stock market had lost $30 billion in its market value -- a total of 40% of its value. The stock market crash was the first event of the Great Depression.

1930

1930 Nazis Win 107 Seats In Parliament -(9/14/30) The Nazi Party won 107 seats in the election for the German Reichstag. The party became the second largest in Germany.
1930 London Naval Accord -(4/22/30) Great Britain, the United States and Japan signed a naval pact that limited the number of capital ships each could have.
1930 Gandhi Leads Revolt in India -(4/14/31) In January 1930, Spanish dictator Primo de Riverra, who had been supported by the Spanish King, resigned. Agitation then increased for the restoration of the Constitution. In April 1931, King Alfonso left Spain without abdicating. In June, elections were held which gave the Republican-Socialist majority a commanding victory. A new constitution was adopted that provided for universal suffrage and complete separation of Church and State.
1930 Chiang Kai-shek Attacks Communists -Chiang Kai-Shek began the first of five military campaigns against the Communists. In the first campaign, he moved against Communists in southern Kiangsi and in parts of Fukein and Hunan provinces.
1930 Hawley-Smoot Tariff -(6/17/30) This tariff called for raising the rate of tariff to as high as 49%. Its supporters felt this would help fight the Depression. In fact, it helped to ensure the length and depth of the Depression.
1930 Peruvian President Ousted -A rebellion broke out in Southern Peru in August. As a result, Peruvian President Ausgusto Leguioa was forced to resign.
1930 Flash Bulb Introduced-The General Electric Company introduced the flash bulb for taking photos. This allowed for photographs to be taken in low light. The flash bulb replaced the powder flash.
1930 Cyclotron Invented -The Cyclotron, otherwise known as the atom smasher, was invented by Ernest Lawrence, an American physicist at the University of California at Berkely. The particle accelerator, as it was also known, allowed advanced research in the areas of biology and physics. In 1939, Lawrence received the Nobel Prize for Physics for his work.
1930 Revolt in Brazil -(11/3/30) After Conservative Julio Prestes was elected President, a revolt broke out in the Southern provinces of Brazil. The revolt was led by Getulio Vargas, the governor of Rio Grande del Sol. Vargas became President.
